The Service
The Participation Service
In line with the General Policy Statement 2019-2024, and with the aim of strengthening participatory democracy in the Brussels Region, the decision was made to establish a new Regional Service for Citizen Participation. In 2022, this service became part of the Territorial Knowledge Department. The service comprises a team of facilitators who support participatory processes and help cultivate a genuine culture of participation and innovation in the Brussels Region.

To provide effective support and guidance to project leaders from regional and local public bodies or citizen groups, the Service has set itself the following objectives:
- Establish a framework that strengthens participatory democracy, primarily through the development of an online platform offering:
- a toolbox to support project leaders at every stage of their participatory processes
- a directory of ongoing participatory initiatives in the Brussels-Capital Region
- a list of skilled facilitators and experts in the field
- Encourage the emergence of citizen initiatives through the following actions:
- the launch of a central contract service offering project managers access to high-demand resources for participatory processes including process design and implementation, facilitation, outreach and communication.
- conducting research, monitoring trends and analysing needs and innovations in the sector to continuously improve practices and develop accessible, innovative tools.
- the creation of a network of public participation actors across the Brussels Region, in Belgium and internationally.
- providing support for selected projects every year.
